India lifts Chinese toy ban, seeks safety guarantees

New Delhi: India on Monday lifted a ban on imports of Chinese toys after Beijing warned the move could seriously jeopardize bilateral trade ties.

The trade ministry said Chinese toys could be imported but needed to be certified as safe according to international standards.

In January the government barred imports of Chinese toys for six months on the grounds of “public health and safety"—drawing strong condemnation from Beijing which warned trade ties could be “seriously impacted."

But on Monday, the ministry said Chinese toy imports “shall be permitted" if accompanied by certificates showing they “conform to standards prescribed" by safety bodies such as the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
