New Delhi: Air India has registered an increase both in terms of the number of passengers carried by it and its revenue in May this year as against the corresponding period last year, its spokesman said on Wednesday.

May this year has proved to be “another good month" for the national carrier with its passenger revenue per day jumping by nearly 20% from last year’s Rs38 crore to Rs44 crore this year.

The average number of passengers carried by the airline in May also increased by 5% from 45,230 last year to 47,700. The passenger load factor on the domestic network was 80% last month and in the international sector it was 73%. The airline also achieved ‘on-time performance’ of 81%.

“The yield on the domestic sector was Rs7.41 per passenger kilometre (PKM) and in the overall network it was Rs4.47 PKM which reflects a 10% increase vis-a-vis last year," the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the national carrier’s low-cost arm Air India Express also recorded increased passenger revenue and number of passengers carried by it in May.

The average revenue of Air India Express, which operates mostly in the Gulf sector, per day was Rs8.13 crores and it flew 8,500 passengers last month. Its passenger load factor touched an all-time high of 90% on international sector in May while the yields also reached to Rs4.08 per PKM, he said.

Air India operated on an average 416 flights per day and Air India Express 54, making a total of 470 flights carrying a total of 56,129 passengers per day.

“The performance achieved by Air India exceeded turnaround plan under each and every parameter," he said.

Air India, which had taken delivery of the 14th B-787 aircraft in Charleston in USA from the Boeing factory on 2 June, arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday. The airline would be taking the delivery of the 15th Dreamliner aircraft towards the end of this month.

“In this connection, Air India had already arranged a bridge financing facility of $410 million from Deutsche Bank and Standard Chartered Bank, which would be used for financing next four B-787 Dreamliner aircraft," the spokesman said.
