New Delhi: Flier-friendly measures are being introduced at many of India’s airports that let you skip the baggage check-in queues and leave the baggage scanning area quickly.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) on Thursday said it has deployed SITA Scan&Fly units, where passengers who have already checked in online can tag and drop their bags and head directly for security check. The units are available to passengers of Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo.

Self-service Scan&Fly units can be attached to existing airport check-in desks. This also helps save costs by reducing the number of check-in staff, and faster passenger movement at the airport, which handles the highest number of aircraft movements.

Currently, 54% of passengers in India use some self-service technology; however, given Indian travellers’ propensity to use technology, this is expected to rise sharply over the next few years, the airport said in a statement.

“MIAL would like to maintain and grow its position as the most innovative airport in India, using technology to optimize the current airport infrastructure and manage the rapid growth of passengers," Rajeev Jain, CEO, MIAL said in the same statement.

Meanwhile, various airports and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) that provides security services have started a pilot project under which scanned hand bags will not need to have tags security-stamped. A trial run has started from 15 December at airports in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

“After the successful completion of the effort, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India (BCAS) has advised to do away with the stamping of hand baggage’s tag for implementing the best practice adopted internationally for hassle-free movement of passengers," civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said in a statement on Thursday. After BCAS assesses the results, the practice will be extended to other airports.

To strengthen the security screening of baggage, high-resolution CCTV cameras and other appropriate technologies have been deployed by airport operators as advised by the BCAS.

“This is a very progressive step and will facilitate hassle-free movement of passengers. This will also bring down the traversal time at the airports," Raju said, adding that at the same time, security concerns will continue to get the highest priority to ensure Indian skies are kept safe.
