One of the best books on leadership that Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, founder, chairman and managing director, ACME Group, has read is from the popular Born to Win series, which talks about transactional analysis.
Born to Win—Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments, authored by Muriel James and Dorothy Jongeward, tells how every person has the potential to be a winner.
“The book defines the process of two individuals interacting and the way transactions happen," said Upadhyay.
He said that an important leadership lesson he learnt from the book is that a leader should understand that every transaction is a discussion. “You have to understand the state of mind of the person you are interacting with," Upadhyay said.
The book also taught Upadhyay how to deal with people while transacting conflicting issues.
It is very difficult for people to deal with such issues and the book taught me how to deal with these situations, he said. “We have to look at the transaction from the point of view of a third person to get a hang of the situation," Upadhyay said.
The book also teaches you how to continue a conversation, he said. The most difficult part of leadership is to deal with people, according to him, and the book has given him important insights to do that effectively.
“One of the most sophisticated machines in the world is a human and the biggest challenge is to deal with humans for any leader," said Upadhyay. “This is the machine, which he has to use at the optimum level and if the leader fails to do so, however great he/she is, he/she won’t be successful," he added.
