Mumbai: Italy’s bottled mineral water company Sanpellegrino SpA has a presence in 140 countries, and is now firming up plans to enter India. In an interview on the sidelines of the Mint Luxury Conference in Mumbai on Friday, Stefano Agostini, the company’s president and chief executive, spoke about the potential that India offers as a market. Edited excerpts.

If you could take us through the brand, its heritage and journey…

Sanpellegrino is a natural mineral water that comes from the Alps – between Italy and Switzerland. The water comes from the rock. The water has a journey of 30 years before it becomes a spring and along the journey it acquires the minerals which makes it so special. The mineral in Sanpellegrino are very well adapted for the food and cleanses the mouth. We export 90% of what we make to 140 countries.

You have been present in several countries but India is not one among them…

This conference is a great opportunity for us to explain why we have been so successful globally. Our target is to be on top of gastronomy and bringing Italian lifestyle to India as we are aware that Indians appreciate good life. The reason we are not present in this country is because of the regulatory law. India is not following the global standards with regards to quantum of mineral in water. It’s a pity, because ours is a good mineral. We have been working with the health ministry since the last three years and India will align itself with the global standards and hopefully we should be able to launch our business in India in 2015.

What would be your market entry strategy for India?

Our market entry strategy has been consistent globally—which is to support the gastronomy business—the chef of top restaurants that promotes good food. It’s a great opportunity for India to not only promote Indian food in India, but also bring outside food to India in a more contemporary way. India is going to be a big market for us not only because of the sheer number of inhabitants, but also because it has a thriving hospitality and tourism market. We already have a strong presence in countries like Korea and Vietnam.
