Mumbai:Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest auto maker by revenue, sold 46,118 vehicles in September, a decline of 8% from a year ago, the company said in a statement.

Dragged down by light commercial vehicle sales which dropped 24%, the company’s overall commercial vehicles sales declined 13% to 28,943 units in the domestic market. The sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles however, increased 18% to 10,404 units.

Meanwhile, sales continued to decline at the passenger vehicle unit, falling 7% to 11,931 units. While sales of passenger cars came in at 9,766 units, utility vehicles dropped 30% to 2,165 units. In a bid to shore up volume in the passenger car market, Tata Motors launched the Zest in August. The company did not disclose the sales units of the model separately.

Tata Motors shares closed unchanged at 502 on BSE, while the benchmark 30-share Sensex shed 0.23% to 26,567.99 points.
