Mumbai: French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis plans to launch reusable insulin pens in India in the second quarter of 2011, a senior official said on Monday.

“This is an Indianised device and is in advanced state of development. This is being developed in partnership with some Indian firms," Shailesh Ayyangar, vice-president, South Asia, Sanofi-Aventis, told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

Sanofi-Aventis will also launch Combiflam cream in the Indian market in January 2011, he added.

The company as of now sells 1.6 billion tablets of its painkiller Combiflam in India every year, he said.

Ayyengar expects the sales growth for Sanofi-Aventis in India to come from rural markets, diabetes products, over-the-counter (OTC) brands and vaccines.

He expects one-third of the overall sales of Sanofi-Aventis in India to come from rural markets in 2011, he added.

Sanofi-Aventis has launched a low cost drug programme for rural markets in India called ‘Prayas.´ the programme supplies affordable drugs in rural areas of 11 states in India, he said.

He expects this initiative to break even by 2011-end.

Sanofi-Aventis runs its India operations through Aventis Pharma and three other unlisted units.
