Mumbai: Mumbai-based drug maker Cipla Ltd on Thursday announced a six-member management council which will act as the company’s apex executive leadership.

Cipla also named Umang Vohra, currently its global chief financial and strategy officer, as global chief operating officer with immediate effect. Vohra replaces Sudhanshu Priyadarshi, who is leaving the company. Previously, Umang was the head of the North America business at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.

In his new role, Vohra will lead the generics and active pharmaceutical ingredients businesses across all markets globally. He will also integrate technical services, global supply chain, global portfolio, business development and licensing and business planning functions, Cipla said in a statement.

Samina Vaziralli, executive director, will be the company’s global head for strategy, M&A, Cipla New Ventures and key partner relationships.

The management council will be led by Subhanu Saxena, managing director and global chief executive officer, and includes Geena Malhotra (global head-integrated product development), Ranjana Pathak (global head-quality) and Prabir Jha (global chief people officer).

“We are simplifying our leadership structure to prepare Cipla for the next phase of our growth. This is a natural evolution at this stage of our plans," Saxena said.

In September, Cipla acquired US-based InvaGen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Exelan Pharmaceuticals Inc., for $550 million, to strengthen its presence in world’s largest drug market, in its second largest acquisition ever.

In its largest acquisition in 2013, Cipla had acquired 100% stake in South African arm Cipla Medpro South Africa Ltd for 2,707 crore.
