Bengaluru: Online cab hailing service Ola has appointed former Lazada executive Sundeep Sahni as vice-president of new initiatives, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Lazada, an e-commerce company backed by German incubator Rocket Internet, is present in six south Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

In his earlier role as the managing director of Lazada Indonesia, Sahni helped the company raise $100 million from institutional investors, besides inking exclusive brand partnerships with Motorola and Xiaomi, Ola said in a statement.

Sahni had earlier worked with Watheeqa Capital Company, a private equity firm in Cairo and Credit Suisse. “His intuitive knowledge and experience of start-ups having been on both operational and investment sides in his past roles will be valuable for us," said Bhavish Agarwal, co-founder and chief executive of Ola.

Ola has of late entered several new categories like food and grocery delivery. The company launched Ola Café, a food delivery business, in March. In June, the company started a pilot project to deliver groceries called Ola Store.

Ola, which acquired cross-town rival TaxiForSure in March for $200 million, has forged associations with few of the biggest names of India Inc. The company secured an investment from Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, and former chief executive of Vodafone Arun Sarin earlier this month. Sarin will also join the company’s board.
