Gambhir was the chief strategy officer of Godrej Industries Ltd and its associated companies. Mahendran has indicated that he would like to retire when his current term expires on 30 June 2013, to devote time to his family businesses.
Mahendran will continue to serve on GCPL’s board after his retirement. Over the next eight months, Mahendran and Gambhir will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities.
“Over the last 18 years, Mahendran has provided tremendous leadership to the group in different roles. As managing director of GCPL, he successfully guided the company through the merger with Godrej Sara Lee and our internationalization strategy. We are very appreciative that we will continue to benefit from his insights and experience as a member of the board," said Adi Godrej, chairman of GCPL.
Gambhir, a former partner at Bain and Co. in India, joined the Godrej Group in 2009 and has since driven the mergers and acquisitions in the company besides steering the group’s 10x10 vision and GCPL’s 3x3 strategy. He also oversees the finance, investor relations, legal and IT functions for Godrej Industries.
Over the years, Gambhir has also worked closely with Nisa Godrej, chairman Adi Godrej’s younger daughter, and as the secretary of the Godrej Family Business Board. He also serves on the investment committee for Omnivore Capital, an agriculture technology-focused venture fund backed by the Godrej Group.
Gambhir is an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS (Computer Science) and BA (Economics) from Lafayette College.
