Plan panel concerned about small retailers

New Delhi: A top official of the Planning Commission says the agency is “concerned" by the rapid growth of modern retailing in the country and it thinks the development will come at the expense of small shopkeepers.

“It should not happen at the expense of the small and unorganized groups," Syeda Hameed, member of the commission, said. “You can’t take away the livelihood from the rehri-patri walas (roadside vendors)… We want this (the growth of modern retailers) to happen without hurting people."
