Mumbai: Basel-based pharma equipment maker Sotax Group said on Thursday it’s planning to move its Asia-Pacific headquarters to Mumbai from Shanghai.

The group, a global developer of pharmaceutical testing equipment and services, has been present in India since 2011. It recently set up a research and development centre in Mumbai and plans to open a manufacturing plant tailored to the Indian market in January 2014.

“We see greater potential in the Indian market in the coming years," said Jean-Louis Raton, head of Asia-Pacific unit.

The company’s two manufacturing plants are located in Switzerland and the US. Key customers include Pfizer Inc., GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd and Novartis AG.

Sotax, which announced its takeover of Dr. Schleuniger Pharmatron on Thursday, said the deal will strengthen its presence in India.

Swiss-based Dr. Schleuniger has been present in India since 1997, catering to companies including Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd and Novartis India.
