Anand Chandrasekaran's appointment will strengthen Snapdeal's leadership team and help it compete aggressively with rivals Flipkart and Amazon
New Delhi: Online marketplace Snapdeal on Wednesday named Anand Chandrasekaran as its chief product officer, strengthening its leadership team, as the company gears up to compete more aggressively with rivals Flipkart and Amazon.
“Snapdeal is in a phase of hyper growth and I believe under Anand’s leadership we will set new benchmarks for intuitive and highly engaging products not just within India but globally as well," said Rohit Bansal, co-founder of Snapdeal.
A former Bharti Airtel executive, Chandrasekaran comes with 15 years of experience at companies such as online technology firm Yahoo, software innovator Openwave and mobile service management firm Aeroprise Inc.
At Yahoo, Chandrasekaran was senior director of search products and member of search leadership as well as senior director for mobile products. He worked as director of product at Openwave and co-founded Aeroprise. The company was later acquired by BMC Software.
Chandrasekaran was also chief products officer at Bharti Airtel, responsible for driving product strategy and roadmap for Wynk Music and Airtel Money. He led the product strategy and operations for Airtel Online, an e-commerce service, and MyAirtel app, which currently has over 28 million monthly users and does business of at least $1 billion in annual gross merchandising value (GMV, or cost of goods sold).
“I am truly excited to be a part of the young and dynamic team at Snapdeal. The company’s vision to solve a real and existing challenge in the country—that of access for consumers and of reach for small and medium businesses, is very inspiring. I look forward to working towards building a highly scalable, sustainable, innovative and future-ready technology platform that will be seen as an example for others to emulate in the years to come," Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
Chandrasekaran holds a masters in electrical engineering from Stanford University, US, and a bachelors degree in communications engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.
Snapdeal’s effort to boost its management team comes amid growing competition among online retail companies, which raised more than $4 billion to fund expansion last year.
Snapdeal, run by Jasper Infotech Pvt. Ltd, recently hired former Coca-Cola India marketing director Idi Srinivas as marketing head. On Monday, Snapdeal named Dharmendra Panwar as vice-president, internal controls and risk assurance, to strengthen its operational processes and risk management.
