New Delhi: As Rajinikanth’s Tamil gangster drama Kabali readies for release this week, here’s a look at the superstar’s Bollywood connection. There are several Hindi blockbusters that have been remade in Tamil with the star in the lead. Incidentally, the 10 listed below were remakes of films which had Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role:
Majboor (1974): Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi, the film that made ₹ 2 crore at the box office was remade in Tamil as Naan Vazhavaippen (1979). Rajinikanth’s role was an extended cameo in the Sivaji Ganesan-starrer.
Deewar (1975): Yash Chopra’s Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor classic about two brothers on conflicting sides of the law was remade with Rajinikanth as Thee (1981), directed by R. Krishnamurthy. Deewar grossed ₹ 6 crore at the box office.
Khoon Pasina (1977): Bachchan’s action crime film co-starring Rekha made ₹ 3 crore at the box office, and was remade with Rajinikanth as Siva (1989), directed by Ameerjan.

Amar Akbar Anthony (1977): Manmohan Desai’s cult classic was based on the favourite theme of the 1970s—the lost-and-found formula. It made about ₹ 9 crore in box office collections. The Tamil remake starring Rajinikanth was titled Shankar Salim Simon (1978). Rajinikanth also played a role in the Telugu remake, titled Ram Robert Rahim.
Don (1978): Rajinikanth’s Billa (1980), directed by R. Krishnamurthy, was the official remake of Bachchan’s classic action thriller. The Hindi film co-starring Zeenat Aman made ₹ 7 crore at the box office.
Kasme Vaade (1978): Rajinikanth’s Dharmathin Thalaiavan (1988) was a remake of Kasme Vaade, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee, a romantic thriller directed by Ramesh Behl. The Hindi film managed ₹ 4 crore at the box office.
Laawaris (1981): The Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster, as the name suggests, was about an orphan and was directed by Prakash Mehra and netted ₹ 9 crore in box office collections. Rajinikanth starred in the Tamil remake titled Panakkaran (1990), directed by P. Vasu.
Khuddar (1982): The Bachchan-starrer about two brothers was remade in Tamil with Rajinikanth as Padikkadavan (1985). The Hindi film, directed by Ravi Tandon, earned ₹ 7 crore in box office collections.
Namak Halaal (1982): Bachchan played a naive and zealous employee to Shashi Kapoor in the Prakash Mehra-directed film. It was remade in Tamil as Velaikaran with S.P. Muthuraman as director. The Hindi film earned ₹ 7.5 crore in box office collections.
Mard (1985): Bachchan played a horse-cart driver in the film co-starring Amrita Singh and directed by Manmohan Desai. It made ₹ 9 crore in box office collections and was remade as a Rajinikanth-starrer titled Maaveeran (1986).
