Tamil action-comedy stands out among string of forgettable Bollywood releases
Tamil action-comedy 'Yatchan' opens to positive reviews
New Delhi: Salman Khan’s much-hyped production, Hero, starring newcomers Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty is a remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 hit by the same name. The film directed by Nikhil Advani doesn’t seem to have made much progress though and is as outdated as the original. Firstpost lamented the “colossal ineptitude" that is the launch of the two star kids and called the movie “ill-conceived, lazily made and forgettable".
Movie website Bollywood Life noted that director Advani plays it too safe and doesn’t come up with a script fresh or innovative enough to do justice to anything but the newcomers’ strengths. While the lead pair shows promise, the movie tests your patience quite a bit, the report said.
Another comedy releasing this week is Chittaranjan Tripathy’s Tera Mera Tedha Medha that stars Rahul Bagga, Geetika Tyagi, Rajesh Sharma and director Tripathi himself. Magna Magazines called the film “crookedly bad" and said the lack of budget shows up in each frame of the illogical and completely unfunny comedy.
Director Prakash Nambiar’s The Perfect Girl-Ek Simple Si Love Story, as the name suggests, is a romantic drama. The film, starring Tara Alisha Berry and Teeshay, is not as conventional as it sounds. The Times of India praised the film’s fresh and unique perspective on serendipity and conversation romance and the two newcomers for holding their own.
American music drama We Are Your Friends, directed by Max Joseph, comes to India this week. Starring Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Wes Bentley, it has been called “a genuine feel-good movie" by The Hollywood Reporter which has praised its energy, innocence and sincerity that will speak even to non-electronic dance music aficionados, on whom the plot is based.
Variety magazine lauded the film’s intentions as well, but felt it is too predictable to sustain interest for long. Efron is a watchable screen presence but the film only taps the surface of the electronic dance phenomenon for emotional hooks instead of delving deep into it.
From south of the Vindhyas, Vishnuvardhan’s Tamil action-comedy Yatchan featuring Arya and Kreshna has opened to positive reviews. Movie website Filmi Beat praised the film’s technical brilliance. The cinematography, background score and editing stand out, while the lead actors are a treat to watch.
Some other films releasing this week haven’t inspired any reviews yet. These include T. Manwani Anand’s Hindi comedy Hum Sab Ullu Hain featuring Gavie Chahal, Rakesh Bedi and Rajesh Puri; independent Bengali film Dwitiyo Ripu directed by Abhijit Chowdhury; Tarn Mann’s Punjabi film Rupinder Gandhi-The Gangster..?, starring Bunty Dhillon, Karamjeet Brar and Dev Kharoud; and R. Viraj’s Marathi comedy-drama Vaajlaach Paahije - Game Ki Shinema, starring Bhalchandra Kadam and Aarti Solanki.
