New Delhi: Arvind Swamy-starrer Dear Dad that released last Friday is the rare Bollywood film that focuses on a father-son relationship in an industry that has always favoured stories depicting the more expressive and emotional female parent. Here are 10 other films that do the same.
Mughal-e-Azam (1960): The epic historical drama essentially traced the war between a father and son over a court dancer. With collections of ₹ 6 crore, it broke all box office records at the time of release and remained the highest-grossing Hindi film for the next 15 years.
Shakti (1982): Veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan came together to play father and son in the Ramesh Sippy-directed action crime drama. The film made about ₹ 6 crore at the box office and won Kumar several best actor awards that season, though Bachchan was also nominated in the same category.
Masoom (1983): An adaptation of Erich Segal’s Man, Woman and Child, Shekhar Kapur’s directorial debut focused in parts on the growing bond between a married man (Naseeruddin Shah) and his illegitimate child (Jugal Hansraj). The film made ₹ 1.20 crore at the box office.
Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995): Aamir Khan played single dad to child actor Adil in Mansoor Khan’s remake of Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep-starrer Kramer vs. Kramer. The film made more than ₹ 6 crore at the box office.
Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005): Akshay Kumar plays an irresponsible and aspiring actor son to Amitabh Bachchan who plays a dying father. The Vipul Shah film, also starring Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah, earned more than ₹ 5 crore at the box office.
Sarkar (2005): Ram Gopal Varma’s crime drama inspired from Hollywood classic The Godfather featured Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan in title roles. The film made more than ₹ 28 crore at the box office.
Apne (2007): The sports drama featured Dharmendra along with real-life sons Sunny and Bobby Deol. The family film directed by Anil Sharma made more than ₹ 15 crore at the box office.
Gandhi, My Father (2007): The biographical drama on the troubled relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal was directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and produced by actor Anil Kapoor. Darshan Jariwala and Akshaye Khanna played lead roles in the film that netted about ₹ 2 crore at the box office.
Paa (2009): Abhishek Bachchan played father to real-life dad Amitabh Bachchan in R. Balki’s comedy drama on a rare genetic condition called progeria, which results in early aging. The film won the senior Bachchan a National Award for Best Actor and crossed ₹ 30 crore in box office collections.
Udaan (2010): Vikramaditya Motwane’s coming-of-age drama on the relationship of a young teenager with his abusive father featured Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Roy in lead roles. The film was officially selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, but only managed about ₹ 5 lakh at the box office.
