Indian track and field athlete fails dope test

New Delhi: An Indian track and field athlete has tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone at the Commonwealth Games, Games Federation chief Mike Fennell said on Wednesday.

Under the anti-doping rules of the Games, the host nation athlete would not be named until it was confirmed he or she had been informed of the result, Fennell added.

“It’s very unfortunate," Lalit Bhanot, secretary general of the local organizing committee, told a news conference.

“We tried our level best. Not only the federations but also the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) tried with our out of competition tests.

“The government is very serious about these things. One can’t be controlled if the person is trying to take some forbidden substance to enhance their performance."

More than 1,300 tests had been performed until the end Tuesday, Fennell said, and there have been three positive tests.

Nigerian Osayemi Oludamola was stripped of the women’s 100 metres gold medal on Tuesday after her B sample confirmed a positive test for a banned stimulant.

Her compatriot Samuel Okon, a 110m hurdler who also tested positive for methylhexaneamine, waived his right to have his B Sample tested and was also been disqualified.

Doping has been a recurring problem in India with weightlifting producing the highest number of offenders -- six were banned last year and almost as many this.

In all, two Indian athletes, six wrestlers, three swimmers and one weightlifter tested positive for methylhexanaemine this year.
