Mumbai: Vishal Gondal, managing director of Disney UTV’s digital division, has resigned to launch his own business, the company said on Tuesday.
Gondal was the founder and former chief executive of gaming company Indiagames that UTV Software Communications Ltd (now Disney UTV) acquired in 2006. At Disney UTV, he will be replaced by Sameer Ganapathy, who was handling distribution for its media networks business.
Disney UTV’s digital business, which combines mobile, video, audio, broadband, games and similar segments, has an audience reach of at least 300 million in India, according to the company. Its Indiagames division claims a 50% share of the domestic gaming market.
“Over last 18 months, we have spent time integrating the teams and set a platform for continued growth. Consequently, I’ve decided to move on to pursue my dreams and passion of being an entrepreneur," said Gondal, whose last working day at Disney UTV will be 30 June.
UTV Software, promoted by Ronnie Screwvala (now managing director of Disney UTV), initially bought a 51% stake in Indiagames before increasing its holding in the gaming company to more than 80% in 2011.
Last year, Walt Disney Co. bought a controlling stake in UTV. The Disney UTV digital division was formed following that, combining the businesses of Disney, UTV and Indiagames.
