Mughal-e-Azam turns fifty

On Thursday K. Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam turns fifty. Delhi’s venerable Golcha Cinema screened the film when it first got released on August 5 1960, the film’s reels arriving in a procession of elephants.

We talked to Golcha’s current deputy general manager as well as a publicist for the movie to tell us more about the experience of the film and its initial release. They also tell us about the film’s music and in particular the story of how its most legendary song came to be.
