Ten high-profile Bollywood clashes
Bollywood is no stranger to box office clashes. Here's a look at 10 pairs of movies that released together over the years
New Delhi: It’s going to be an exciting Friday at the movies after a three-week dry run. All eyes are now set on the biggest Bollywood clash of the year—Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale that reunites superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s war saga Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Industry experts may remain divided in their opinion on whether either team will be at a loss but Bollywood is no stranger to box office clashes. Here’s looking at 10 other pairs of movies that released together over the years.
1.Haider and Bang Bang (2014)
The most recent example of a high-profile Bollywood clash was Vishal Bharadwaj’ s crime drama set amid insurgency-hit conflicts of Kashmir coming up against the Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif-starrer last year. While Haider earned nearly ₹ 70 crore worldwide besides enormous praise for lead actors Shahid Kapoor and Tabu, Bang Bang made a stupendous ₹ 250 crore.
2.Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar (2012)
In a Diwali clash, filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last directed movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan released along side Ajay Devgn-starrer Son of Sardaar. In a rare instance, both films impressed audiences with the Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif romantic drama earning more than ₹ 120 crore and the Devgn comedy not lagging too far behind at ₹ 105 crore.
3.Golmaal 3 and Action Replayy (2010)
The third part of Rohit Shetty’s action comedy franchise released on the same day as the Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer. While the former crossed ₹ 100 crore in box office collections, the latter lagged behind in both critical and commercial success, making less than ₹ 30 crore.
4.Saawariya and Om Shanti Om (2007)
This December is not the first time Shah Rukh Khan and director Bhansali will compete with each other at the box office. The two have already battled it out earlier during Diwali 2007 when Bhansali’s Saawariya that marked the debut of star kids Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor clashed with Khan’s retro saga Om Shanti Om that introduced actor Deepika Padukone (who is Bhansali’s leading lady in Bajirao). While Saawariya faced much heat with ₹ 24 crore, Om Shanti Om triumphed with nearly ₹ 70 crore.
5.Welcome and Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Aamir Khan’s meticulous take on parenting and the special needs of children had clashed with Anees Bazmee’s multi-starrer comedy way back in 2007. Disparate as the two films were, Bazmee’s movie starring Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif outdid the former in terms of numbers earning more than ₹ 55 crore in box office collections. The children’s film wasn’t far behind though; it made more than ₹ 37 crore at the box office and helped open up several discussions in the country.
6.Don and Jaan-E-Mann (2006)
News reports suggest the clash of Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Sultan for Eid next year. There has, however, already been a box office face-off between the two during Diwali 2006. While Shah Rukh Khan’s remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan hit made more than ₹ 24 crore, Salman’s romantic film co-starring Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar managed only ₹ 12 crore.
7.Veer Zaara and Aitraaz (2004)
Also Diwali releases, Yash Chopra’s Veer Zaara featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji clashed with Abbas Mustan directed Aitraaz with Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. While Chopra’s romantic drama made more than ₹ 19 crore at the box office, the bold thriller also managed a lot of eyeballs besides ₹ 7 crore in collections. There were two other releases that week—Ram Gopal Varma’s dance film Naach and a coloured version of K. Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam.
8.Lagaan and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)
The two period films were the first to shatter the myth that a clash in Bollywood had to result in losses for one of the two movies. The Aamir Khan-starrer set in British India made it to the top five nominations for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards for 2001, besides earning ₹ 25 crore at the box office. The Sunny Deol film set during Partition, on the other hand, was the bigger box office winner, making collections of more than ₹ 43 crore.
9.Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)
In yet another Diwali clash, Karan Johar’s by-now iconic directorial debut released on the same day as David Dhawan’s comedy with Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in lead roles. While KKHH fetched a staggering ₹ 42.5 crore along with almost every popular award that season, Dhawan’s loyalists didn’t disappoint either and brought him collections of ₹ 16 crore.
10.Phool aur Kante and Lamhe (1991)
More than two decades before Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani, films of two entirely different genres battle it out on the same Friday, Phool Aur Kante and Lamhe had attempted much the same. The former, a romantic actioner marked the debut of Ajay Devgn and made a fabulous ₹ 5 crore at the box office. The latter starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor was widely regarded as Yash Chopra’s most experimental film and earned mixed reviews and ₹ 2.5 crore in collections.
