New Delhi: Spice Mobiles, a part of Spice Retail Ltd, a mobile internet devices company, will launch India’s first Firefox operating system-based smartphone in partnership with Mozilla Corp. on 29 August.

Priced at Rs2,299, Spice Fire One Mi – FX 1, the device will support Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Bangla, the company said in a statement on Friday.

The phone will compete with Google Inc.’s low-cost Android One smartphones. Google has been developing a sub-$100 smartphone for the Indian market which it plans to launch in September.

The Firefox OS smartphone, based on open web technologies, will have a 2G dual SIM card, 1 GHz processor, 2.5 G connectivity, 2MP (megapixel) primary camera and 1.3 MP front camera.

Spice Retail, the company claimed, has a market share of nearly 4-5% of the Indian handset market, dominated by Samsung Electronics Co. and Micromax Informatics Ltd.
