Apps to even the odds in Odd-Even II

With phase two of the odd-even scheme set to roll out from 15 April, commuters in the capital are already feeling the pressure. These services can help you get over the next fortnight

For lakhs of commuters in Delhi and those travelling from the National Capital Region, it is time again to seek alternatives to get to work and go about their daily routine.

From 15 April, for a period of 15 days, the Delhi government will once again implement the road-rationing plan which will allow private vehicles with odd and even numbers to operate on city roads only on alternate days. The last digit of a private vehicle’s registration number will decide whether it is odd or even, and the date on any given day will decide which set of cars can run.

While the motive behind the first odd-even plan was to reduce pollution, there has been contradicting evidence whether it was successful in that mission. However, for lakhs of commuters in Delhi and those travelling from the National Capital Region (NCR), it is time again to seek alternatives to get to work and go about their daily routine. There are some apps that might make it easier to commute on days when your car cannot be legally driven on Delhi roads between specified timings.

Uber

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows phone

Taxi aggregator Uber has the carpooling feature for users based in Delhi NCR, which allows you to share the ride with another Uber user, as long as both of you are headed in the same direction. This is in addition to the usual UberGO ( 7 per km onwards), UberX ( 9 per km onwards) and UberXL ( 12 per km onwards) cab hiring services. While booking a ride through the Uber app on your phone, you can either book a cab for yourself, or tap on the “shared car" option to carpool. The complex algorithm working in the background will map you with another user headed in the same direction, and ensure there is no delay for either passenger, and the route doesn’t change.

Ola

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows phone

Cab aggregator Ola is another option if cabs are the way forward for you during the road rationing days. Fares start at 6 per km (Micro), 8 per km (Mini) and 10 per km (Prime). You can also use the “Ride Later" option to book a cab in advance, for commuting later in the day.

BlaBlaCar

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android

This is a carpooling service that could come in handy. You can find a ride with someone else headed in the same direction as you are, and pool a ride. Alternatively, if you want, you can sign up for the service and offer to take fellow commuters in the same direction. Once you find a relevant ride option that matches your time and destination requirements, BlaBlaCar connects the car owners with the riders for that ride. The pricing for each trip is displayed in advance, before you book.

Revv

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android

If you are like me, and don’t really like the idea of carpooling with complete strangers or annoying neighbours, Revv has a solution. This self-drive car rental service offers the Hyundai Grand i10, Honda City, Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, Mahindra Scorpio, Toyota Innova and the Audi Q3 at rates starting 59 per hour. They will also deliver the vehicle to your home address, and take it back after you complete the journey. A refundable security deposit of 5,000 is charged at the time of booking.

Poochh-O

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android

This app launched by the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Ltd allows users to see the location of auto-rickshaws and taxis around their location, and get in touch with them directly to fix up a trip. Before you do though, the app provides an estimated cost of the journey, after you punch in the origin and destination points. The app has also added support for bus timetables.

Jugnoo

Available on: Apple iOS, Google Android

Not everyone can afford to travel in cabs daily, particularly if the office is quite far from home. An auto-rickshaw is an option that is marginally easier on the pocket. The app detects your location, and immediately populates the map with the autos available in that area. You can tap on any one to directly call the driver. Jugnoo claims that their tariffs are up to 32% less costly than standard auto-rickshaw charges.

Rapido

Available on: Google Android

Rapido is a platform where one can book a bike ride through a mobile app for travelling solo. It aims to bring last-mile connectivity for people choosing to travel longer distances by the metro. During the odd-even scheme implementation, Rapido plans to offer, from 8am to 9pm, free rides to people travelling to and from metro stations. These rides will be available at select metro junctions like Hauz Khaz and Malviya Nagar, within a 5-km radius.
