Bollywood wins big at the 63rd National Awards
'Baahubali', Amitabh Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut win National Awards
New Delhi: Good news for Bollywood came on Monday morning as the government of India announced the 63rd National Film Awards for the year 2015. While Amitabh Bachchan won the best actor award for his Bengali turn in parental drama Piku, Kangana Ranaut was announced the best actress for her double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Sanjay Leela Bhansali will take home the best director award for his period drama Bajirao Mastani. However, the single-biggest honour for the year went to S.S Rajamouli’s bilingual blockbuster Baahubali: The Beginning, which has been adjudged the best film.
Legendary actor Manoj Kumar will receive the special Dadasaheb Phalke Award at this year’s ceremony.
Established in 1954, the National Film Awards have been administered by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals, along with the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Panorama. Apart from being considered the ultimate film recognition, they also hold the distinction of awarding merit across the country, and especially in regional cinema.
Every year, a national panel is appointed by the government to select the winning entries, which are then awarded at a ceremony held in New Delhi, by the President of India. The 11-member jury was chaired by veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy this year.
