New Delhi: George Varghese has been named chief executive of The Indian Express group. Varghese was president, distribution, at KEC International Ltd, a company owned by Harsh Goenka.

In an internal mail to employees on Monday, Shekhar Gupta, editor-in-chief of the group, announced the appointment of Varghese.

Anant Goenka, director and head of new media at the Express group and son of Express group chairman Viveck Goenka, confirmed Varghese’s appointment.

Varghese worked with The Indian Express between 1988 and 1998. “The important thing is his prior experience at Express, and his understanding of business in power and telecom makes him a perfect match for us. I am sure he will take Express to greater heights," Anant Goenka said.

The products of HT Media Ltd, which publishes Mint, compete with those of The Indian Express.
