On Friday, the Sir Ian McKellen starrer Mr Holmes will join an already formidable list of films based on the great Scottish writer Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective series—Sherlock Holmes.

The first Holmes film, titled Sherlock Holmes Baffled released in 1900. It was a 30-second silent film directed by Arthur Marvin. The film was shown in mutoscopes. Marvin’s initial efforts to bring Holmes to life began a rage among filmmakers of that era as they sought to bring Doyle’s characters to life.

In the recent past, two Sherlock Holmes films were released in 2009 and 2011, directed by Guy Ritchie, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law starring as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively.

Both films performed incredibly well in the box office, with the 2009-film Sherlock Holmes raking in $524 million and the 2011-film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows earning $525 million.
