Facebook lets users in India announce voter registration

The company said it decided to introduce the feature keeping in mind the general election due next year

As more and more youngsters in India become eligible for voting, the new Facebook feature could encourage more potential first-time voters to get registered.

Facebook said it decided to introduce the feature keeping in mind the national election due next year. The social networking website has more than 82 million Indian citizens registered on it.

“In an effort to encourage more Indian citizens to vote in the upcoming elections, starting today, you can add to your timeline as a life event that you registered to vote, and share your story about when, where or why you decided to register," Facebook said in a statement on Thursday.

The “registered to vote" option is activated on users’ profile pages under the “travel and experience" category of the “life events" section.

Users also have the option to publish the date on which they got registered.
