Akhilesh Yadav launches mobile app to connect with people
New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday launched mobile application ‘Samajwadi Akhilesh’ in a bid to keep users updated with the initiatives of the Samajwadi Party (SP).
The app’s homepage has multiple sections including ‘my initiatives’, ‘news and media’, ‘party updates’, ‘social media’ and ‘videos and gallery’. Users can choose to access the app either in English or Hindi and can even provide feedback. The app, which is available across Android, iOS and Windows, has a simple landing page and is user-friendly.
You should always be empowered with the latest information. Happy to launch an app that will keep you updated http://t.co/zkEVeULXUF— Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) August 13, 2015
The SP has stepped up its social media presence ever since the 2014 general elections. Though Akhilesh Yadav had a Twitter account since 2009, he only started tweeting regularly a little before the general elections last year. In addition to this, the party launched a revamped website, which had on its homepage an audio-visual campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, featuring senior party leaders, including SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
In June this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Narendra Modi’ app to provide users with latest news and updates about various governance initiatives and achievements. Through the app, users can also listen to the PM’s radio talk show Mann ki Baat, earn badges through to-do tasks, and read blogs. Other leaders who actively use the social media to engage with people include Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
“The app will provide people with all party-related news, press releases, and information on the chief minister’s social networking activities,” said party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary in an official statement.
Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha, is crucial to the political calculation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While the SP is a key regional party in the state apart from Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party, the BJP is trying to make strong inroads in the state forcing both the regional parties to rethink their political strategies.
The social media outreach by the SP will be instrumental in attracting young voters ahead of the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“Samajwadi Party is training its party workers to become proficient in using digital media so that they can easily use email, website, SMS, Whatsapp, etc to connect with people. These mediums will prove useful in the 2017 elections as people will easily get to know about the party’s achievements,” Chaudhary said in the statement.
