New Delhi: From novels to comics to television franchises, film makers around the world have recycled it all. But when they occasionally venture into non-mainstream territory, phone apps and video games also provide fodder for creative output. With NBC giving the go-ahead to a show based on popular trivia app QuizUp, here’s a list of some movies based on apps and games.

The Angry Birds Movie

The American-Finnish 3D-computer animated family adventure comedy will be directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly and produced by app creator Rovio Entertainment along with Sony Pictures Imageworks. Slated for a summer 2016 release, the movie based on the addictive, comical, low-priced app will feature Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride. YouTube sensation Smosh is also reported to be making a voice cameo.

Warcraft

The upcoming epic fantasy film is based on the video game series by the same name that was created by American developer Blizzard Entertainment. Directed by Duncan Jones and featuring Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel and Paula Patton, the film will be released in June 2016 by Universal Pictures.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

The 2001 action-adventure film was inspired by the Tomb Raider video game series that featured Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Telling the story of Croft’s stylized struggle to obtain ancient artifacts from the enemies, known as the Illuminati, the Simon West-directed film was made at a budget of $115 million and earned more than twice the amount in the US alone.

Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time

The 2010 action fantasy film was based on the video game with the same title but also incorporated elements from Warrior Within and The Two Thrones which are two other titles from the Sands of Time trilogy. Featuring names such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley and directed by Mike Newell, it is one of the highest-grossing films based on a video game.

The Resident Evil Series

The science fiction action horror series is inspired by the video game by the same name created by Japanese developer Capcom. The characters of the game also appear in the movie. With seven releases under its belt, the series will reportedly conclude with a final instalment in 2017.
