New Delhi: If you’re a Ranveer Singh fan, and have been tracking his social media activity over the past week, chances are you’ve come across a mobile app Dubsmash—a German video app that allows you to lip-sync to short audio clips ranging from movies to TV shows, raps, songs, Internet hits and much more—that the actor has been using to promote his upcoming film Dil Dhadakne Do. Singh has been slipping into the shoes of several of his co-actors, including Priyanka Chopra and Anil Kapoor, by lip-syncing their dialogues using Dubsmash and posting the selfie videos on his Facebook page and Twitter handle. Singh finds company in several other international stars like singer Rihanna (who launched her latest single in March using Dubsmash), actors Lena Dunham and Cecily Strong, and a host of popular TV shows like Saturday Night Live. Back home, fans in South India seem to have struck a chord with the app as they dub their favourite dialogues of actors such as Dhanush and Rajnikanth.

Here are a few quick facts about Dubsmash.

1. How do you use Dubsmash?

The free app available on Android and iOS, which has been rated above-four of five across both platform stores, lets you take a selfie video, while simultaneously mixing it with any sound—so you can lip-sync the dialogue while Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator says, “I’ll be back", in the background. It has a simple user interface that makes the process quick, easy and fun. Users can choose any sound they want from Dubsmash’s Soundboard and film a short video (up to 10 seconds) of themselves lip-syncing to it. The app also allows production of user-generated content. Dubmash invites iOS users to upload their own dubs with the Dubloader, and the feature is set to come for Android devices.

2. At least 20 million users across 192 countries

Since founders Jonas Drüppel, Roland Grenke and Daniel Taschik launched Dubsmash in November 2014, the app has been downloaded more than 20 million times. It became the number one app in the iOS store in the founders’ home country, Germany, later climbing to the same spot in 29 other countries, including the UK and France.

“Early in our prototyping phase in October, we already got very positive feedback that made us feel that we found something valuable to many people," Grenke told news website TechCrunch.

“A first strong indicator for a ‘hit’ was reaching the number one position in Germany within a week after its official release. Repeating this situation in different markets confirmed that Dubsmash can be internationally successful," he said.

3. Hit in South India, so far

Social media has seen a barrage of Dubsmash videos swamping Facebook feeds and Twitter conversations. On the latter, it received 950,000 mentions globally in the last one month, according to data by Twitter Inc. South Indian actors, too, have jumped onto the Dubsmash bandwagon—actors Simbu, Premgi Amaren, Vishal and composer Anirudh are some of the celebrities who’ve put up their Dubsmash videos on the Internet. Meanwhile, Dhanush reached out to his fans on microblogging site Twitter by retweeting fan videos with his famous dialogues.
