Deepika Padukone tops IMDb’s Indian movie star list

New Delhi: Actor Deepika Padukone has topped IMDb’s year-end list for the top stars of Indian cinema. IMDb is a global online database on films, television and Internet streams. The rankings have been determined using data from IMDbPro STARmeter rankings, which are based on actual page views of more than 250 million monthly unique visitors to the IMDb site.
“Deepika Padukone’s strong performance in this year’s ‘Padmaavat’ pushed her to the top spot on the 2018 IMDb Top Stars of Indian Cinema list," said Neha Gureja, head of international for IMDb, referring to the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed period saga that had run into controversy.
Deepika Padukone is followed by Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Kubbra Sait (of Netflix’s ‘Sacred Games’), Irrfan Khan, Radhika Apte and Akshay Kumar.
“Radhika Apte delighted audiences this year, appearing in two of the IMDb Top Indian Movies of 2018 – ‘Andhadhun’ (which ranked one) and ‘Padman’ (ranked six). Akshay Kumar, the bold protagonist in ‘Padman’ rounds up the top stars list at number 10. Apte’s ‘Sacred Games’ co-star, Kubbra Sait, makes her debut on the list this year at number 7 with her breakout role in the hit TV series," Gureja added.
Earlier this month, IMDb released a list of the top 10 movies of 2018 based on ranked by visiting users. Ayushmann Khuranna’s ‘Andhadhun’ topped the list followed by Tamil movies ‘Ratsasan’ and ‘96’. Founder and CEO Col Needham said IMDb currently had 2,00,000 Indian title pages and 70% of the traffic came from India. Needham attributed IMDb’s increasing penetration in the country to cheaper cellphones and data packs and the site’s own efforts to customise features for Indian users. The key takeaway for the year is the rise of non-Hindi language cinema, with four of the top 10 titles being regional offerings.
