New Delhi: With the admission process in the University of Delhi (DU) kicking off on Monday evening for undergraduate students, selecting the right college can become a major challenge. There are more than 60 affiliated colleges with the DU with a large variety of courses being offered.
Earlier, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) released the list of top 100 colleges in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2017 rankings. As many as 11 DU colleges are included in the list, including the top rank Miranda House.
■ Miranda House: Ranked first among all colleges in the NIRF 2017, Miranda House is located in the North Campus of the DU. The women college has 233 faculty members, and received NAAC Grade A+ with CGPA 3.61. Miranda House pioneered science education for women at the University of Delhi when it started its B.Sc. Honours (Botany) course in 1948.
■ Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC): Ranked third in the NIRF 2017 list, the SRCC is one of the most sought after colleges in India for commerce and economics courses. Its over 100% cut-off created a major controversy few years back. Its alumni include the likes of finance minister Arun Jaitley.
■ Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD): Part of the DU’s South Campus, ARSD, as it is popularly called, was ranked fifth in the NIRF 2017. It offers various three-year courses in humanities and commerce.
■ Lady Shri Ram College for Women: LSR is regarded as one of the most elite colleges for women in India and was ranked seventh in the NIRF 2017. The cut-off for the first list last year ranged over 95% for most courses.
■ Dyal Singh College: Ranked eighth in the NIRF, the college offers various courses in humanities, science and commerce streams.
■ Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College: The college was ranked ninth in the NIRF and has shifted to the newly-built campus in Dwarka. It has an NAAC B grade with a CGPA of 2.63. The college was established in 1990 and offers nine under-graduate Honours programes in Computer Science, Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, English, Commerce and Bachelor of Management Studies.
■ Keshav Mahavidyalya: Located in Pitampura, Keshav Mahavidyalaya was ranked 15 in the NIRF 2017. It offers BMS, BCom (hons), BSc, BA Psychology, certificate and radio broadcasting courses.
■ Acharya Narendra Dev College: NIRF 2017 ranked the college at 20th spot. Acharya Narendra Dev College is considered among good institutions for science course. It also has an A grade by the NAAC with a CGPA of 3.31.
■ Ramanujan College: It was ranked 33 in the NIRF 2017. Last year, the first cut off for the general category stood at 88 for BA programme and went up to 97 for BSc (Hons) Computer Science.
■ Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening Classes): Ranked 34 in the NIRF 2017, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College offers courses in BCom (hons), BA (hons) Geography, BA (hons) Political Science, BCom Programme and BA Programme.
■ Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College: Ranked at 46 in the NIRF, the college is located in Karol Bagh. It offers courses in BCom (Hons), BCom Prog, BA (Hons) – English, BA (Hons) Hindi, BA (Hons) Punjabi, BA (Hons) History, BA (Hons) Political Science, BA (Hons) Hindi, Journalism & Mass Communication, BA(Hons) Business Economics and BA (Prog).
