New Delhi: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member of the Delhi legislative assembly was arrested on Thursday for alleged cheating and land grabbing, a month after the arrest of the state’s law minister on charges that he possessed a fake degree.

Manoj Kumar, who represents Kondli in east Delhi, was charged under section 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document, 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. He was questioned in connection with the case registered last year before he was arrested.

“This is an old matter related to land fraud," Delhi police commissioner B.S. Bassi said.

The case was registered against Kumar following allegations that he duped a business partner of 6 lakh. The partner claimed that he had given 6 lakh in November 2012 to Kumar, who was then a property dealer, to buy a plot and that he had not repaid the amount.

Kumar’s arrest comes as another embarrassment for AAP, which won the Delhi polls in February. Last month, police arrested law minister Jitender Singh Tomar for alleged cheating, forgery and forgery with intent to cheat and criminal conspiracy, on suspicion that he possessed a fake degree. On 6 June, Tomar’s judicial custody was extended until 20 July.

Also in June, Somnath Bharti, another AAP legislator, was summoned by the Delhi Commission for Women after his wife filed a complaint of domestic violence against him.

In April, AAP legislator Jarnail Singh was booked for assaulting a Municipal Corporation of Delhi engineer and preventing him from carrying out his duties.
