Stress at the workplace is inevitable. However, you can minimize its impact on your body, and enjoy a sound mental and physical health, if you eat right.
• A banana a day keeps stress away. Bananas are rich in potassium which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates the body’s water balance. When stress levels rise, the body’s metabolic rate increases, reducing potassium levels. Bananas help the body rebalance these levels.
• Vitamin C helps fight stress. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables such as amla (Indian gooseberry), all citrus fruits, tomatoes, green peppers, green leafy vegetables, kiwi, broccoli and strawberries.
• To ensure adequate intake of vitamin B and zinc, eat whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, whole wheat, pulses, nuts and seeds.
• Research suggests that Omega-3 oils, present in fish such as sardines, can improve the body’s ability to cope with stress. If you are a vegetarian, you can take Omega-3 capsules.
• Too much caffeine can lead to poor concentration. Instead, have more green tea. It is a good source of amino acid I-theanine, considered good for beating stress.
• When you are stressed, the body releases hormones that cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, triggering cravings and anxiety. To help keep blood sugar levels even, eat foods such as dried apricots, etc.
• Ginger root, an aromatic stimulant, is very good when you are stressed. It improves appetite, increases production of digestive fluids, and boosts the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. The gingerol in ginger acts directly on the stomach and liver to reduce nausea.
• You can also add ginger to stir-fries or chicken dishes, or brew a pot of ginger tea. Just add a half-cup of coarsely chopped fresh ginger root to three cups of water, bring to a boil, and let simmer it for 10 minutes.
• Oatmeal is packed with soluble fibre, which prevents volatile blood sugar. It also gives you better concentration and staying power, and helps control headaches.
• Don’t rush through breakfast. Nutritionists say this can set you up for overeating all day long. Instead, if you take your time to finish breakfast, itmakes for a great start to the day. Also, make sure that you don’t skip your breakfast altogether.
• Finally, make sure you drink plenty of water.
