New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s domestic sales in January remained almost unchanged as compared to last year. It sold 106,383 units during the month as compared to last year’s 105,559 units. The company attributed it to fewer number of production days.

The volumes were also dragged down by contraction in sales of its entry-level models Wagon R and Alto. It declined 4.3%. Cumulative sales of compact models including the Swift, Dzire, Ritz and the recently launched Baleno too dropped 2.8%. Baleno’s sales have been strong with a waiting list of six months.

The company’s exports during the month also contracted by a sharp 34.6% to 7,223 units over a year ago.

Fuelled primarily by new models such as Baleno, car sales in India have been rising for the last 13 months. A flurry of new launches at the forthcoming auto expo is expected to keep up the momentum. A soft interest rate and low fuel prices are also likely to be enablers for growth.
