Worldwide shipments of personal computers declined in the first three months of 2011, with the advent of media tablets slowing consumer PC demand, according to research firm Gartner. Worldwide PC shipments totalled 84.2 million units, a 1.1% year-on-year fall, the first in six quarters.

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said low prices for PCs no longer attracted consumers. “With the launch of the iPad 2 in February, more consumers either switched to buying an alternative device or simply held back from buying PCs. We’re investigating whether this trend is likely to have a long-term effect on the PC market," Kitagawa said.
