If you want to beat stress at work, go out and play a sport! Playing will also help boost your decision-making skills and, of course, keep you healthy.
Work and play go hand-in-hand. There’s no doubt that sports improves one’s ability to lead and work together as team.
Additionally, playing sports frees our minds, teaches us to deal with pressure while having fun, aids in decision-making, helps build character, and, of course, keeps us healthy! And a lot of these skills directly impact our performance at work!
Back when we were in school, everyone eagerly waited for the ‘PT’ period to pick up a ball, run to the ground, and start playing. Back then, playing sports was not only satisfying, but it also helped us be more active and increased our confidence.
With social media becoming a significant part of our daily lives, binge-watching TV shows becoming a habit; the most we tend to play – if at all – seems to be online games! The youthful pursuit of playing games is gradually dying out, and that is not great news.
A recent survey conducted by global sports brand PUMA and Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli discovered that 57% of the respondents across 18 Indian cities had not played a sport even once in the last one year! And while 58% of these respondents admitted to indulging four-five hours on social media, watching TV, and messaging friends every day, they are the same working professionals who quoted lack of time as the primary reason for not to play.
The study went on to find that 65% of the respondents play with their neighbours and 76% play in open spaces near their homes, which clearly concludes that ‘lack of infrastructure’ cannot be an immovable excuse for not playing. It was also found that 81% of those who do play do so for the joy of it. A statistic that is easy to relate to – as working professionals, playing allows us to stay fit while our keeping minds stress-free.
The results of the study stumped even Virat, who said, “It is shocking to see that one-third of the country has not taken part in any kind of physical activity in the last one year." He added that, “When you are physically fit, you are more energized to take on challenges. I have experienced this personally, and therefore, strongly believe in leading an active lifestyle."
If the survey has taught us anything, it is that we’ve got to step up our motivation to play in order to reap benefits in our professional (and personal!) lives. Technology and social media are gaining preference over health and fitness in our lives. This needs to change. Sports can be seamlessly integrated into our daily life – as one can do it anywhere and at any time.
In short, playing sports has far-reaching benefits that impact our work positively. And, undoubtedly, the time for us to #ComeOutAndPlay is now!
