Diesel Ban: SC to hear Mercedes plea to pay environment cess
Mercedes agreed to deposit with the requisite authority 1%of its invoice value as an environment cess requesting the ban to be lifted
New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Friday a plea by automaker Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd, seeking an end to the ban on luxury diesel vehicles.
Mercedes agreed to deposit with the requisite authority 1% of its invoice value as an environment cess requesting the ban to be lifted.
Chief justice T.S. Thakur said the company’s plea will be considered on 12 August.
The Supreme Court, in December 2015, directed that no diesel cars over 2,000cc engine capacity would be registered in the National Capital Region.
This ban has continued until further orders of the court.
This impacted auto makers like Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd and Mercedes-Benz, who approached the apex court to lift the ban.
The court on 4 July reserved its order on the issue of modifying its order to allow registrations of these vehicles.
