Google India to focus on cloud computing

Hyderabad: The Indian arm of search technology leader Google Inc said that it has decided to step up its focus on research and development in cloud computing, with Hyderabad as its global hub for this. Peeyush Ranjan, head of engineering, for Google in India said the company plans to double headcount in the next 2 years, from 300 engineers now, working mostly on cloud computing. Google has some 2,000 employees in its Indian operations with 300 engineers spread between Bangalore and Hyderabad. He did not disclose the size of investment that Google plans to make on cloud computing R&D activities in India.
Ranjan said that he was very upbeat over business prospects in cloud computing from India’s price-conscious small and medium businesses. SMB’s are showing interest in adopting cloud computing model as they can dispense with issues of maintaining data centers and software upgrades. Google India says it already serves one lakh customers in.
He said Hyderabad would act as center of excellence for Google’s cloud computing R&D activities since it has developed several enterprise offerings and innovations and has a deep pool of engineering talent.
