Hydro power plants await green clearance
Plants with capacity to generate 16,754 MW of power await clearance, despite being cleared by the Central Electricity Authority
New Delhi: Hydro-electric projects with a capacity to generate 16,754 MW of power—enough to meet the demands of states such as Uttar Pradesh and Punjab—are awaiting environmental clearance, even though they have been cleared by the Central Electricity Authority, India’s apex power sector planning body.
“Nineteen hydro-electric projects (HEP), which have been accorded concurrence by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), are pending for environmental and forest clearances," Jyotiraditya Scindia, minister of state for power informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
A majority of the projects mentioned in the Lok Sabha—totalling 13,522 MW—are in Arunachal Pradesh, the state boasting the highest potential for hydropower generation in India.
