India PC shipment up 24%: IDC
Demand from government-led projects drove demand in June quarter, according to technology researcher IDC’s report
Bangalore: Personal computer (PC) shipments to India rose 24% in the June quarter, driven mainly by demand from government-led projects, according to a report by technology researcher International Data Corporation (IDC).
Overall PC shipments to India stood at 3.53 million units, up 24% from the same period last year. In terms of marketshare, Hewlett-Packard Co. accounted for about 34% of sales, followed by Dell Inc. and Acer, with 11% and 10.4%, respectively, the IDC report said.
The figures from IDC come at a time global PC sales continue to decline steadily as an increasing number of data-hungry users migrate to devices such as smartphones and tablets.
“State-led manifesto driven spending on notebooks steered commercial investments in the India PC market in Q2 2013," said Kiran Kumar, research manager at IDC. “Special projects currently being executed in states like UP, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu accounted for roughly one-third of the total PC market size in Q2."
In the latest report, IDC warned that demand for PCs outside special government projects had declined, which remained an area of concern for vendors such as HP and Dell.
“The organic demand for PCs in India outside special projects has weakened, which remains a cause of concern for PC vendors" Kumar said.
