Spam is usually defined as junk or unsolicited email, which can also be used to deliver malware such as trojans and viruses, and launch phishing attacks. Since large volumes of spam can cause a loss of service or degradation in the performance of any network, industries are monitoring the spam activity on their networks even more closely. Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report Volume 21 suggests that the mining industry globally is the most impacted, with 56.3% of all email traffic being marked as spam (note: all data from 2015). Incidentally, smaller organizations are facing more of the brunt of spam attacks because they are perceived to be softer targets than larger organizations and often don’t have a robust web security setup.
