New Delhi: Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd (BCCL), publisher of The Economic Times and The Times of India, on Tuesday rebutted allegations made by Infosys Ltd that some articles published by the newspapers had defamed India’s second largest software services firm.

“We stand by our stories. They are factual, balanced and fully substantiated by quotes. There is nothing that we need to be defensive about," said Anshuman Sharma, director (corporate legal), at BCCL.

The company will draft a reply in due course and affirm its position, said Sharma, adding, “We will refute all their allegations and send our reply in a reasonable amount of time."

On Monday, Infosys issued legal notices of Rs.2,000 crore each against The Economic Times, The Times of India and The Financial Express, a newspaper owned by The Indian Express Ltd, alleging that some articles they had published in the past month had defamed the company.

Meanwhile, in response to a question on microblogging site Twitter about the lawsuit, former chief financial officer at Infosys T.V. Mohandas Pai tweeted, “Should not have done it, bad form."

Infosys in its legal notice said, “We hereby call upon you to forthwith withdraw the defamatory articles from your website and from any other media through which the same has been made available. We further call upon you to issue necessary corrigenda on your website and on all other media through which you have made the defamatory articles available to all individuals and entities, expressing your unconditional apology for defaming Infosys in the manner brought out herein above, forthwith within 24 hours from receipt of this notice."

The Bangalore-based company issued notices against The Times of India for four news stories written over the past one month, The Economic Times for nine articles that have appeared over the past month, and The Financial Express for two articles that were published recently, Mint reported on Monday.

Mint, which is published by HT Media Ltd, directly competes with The Economic Times and The Financial Express.
