Multi-SIM devices dominate phones sales

New Delhi: About 54% of the nearly 166 million mobile devices sold in India in the first 11 months of 2011 were instruments with multiple slots for subscriber identity module (SIM) cards, data from Cyber Media Research Ltd showed on Tuesday.

“In the overall India mobile handsets market, Nokia retained leadership position with 28% share, followed by Samsung at second position with 12% and Micromax at third positionwith 4%, in terms of sales (unit shipments) during November 2011," a Cybermedia statement said.

Cybermedia uses shipments to gauge the number of handsets leaving the manufacturer’s factory or first warehouse, in case the handset is imported.

Some 10 million smartphones were shipped in the first 11 months of 2011, with Nokia being the biggest (38.4% share) followed by Samsung (27.5%), Cybermedia said.
