Enterprise name: GOQii Inc.

Entrepreneur: Vishal Gondal

Founded: February 2014

Brand name: GOQii

In 1999, Vishal Gondal founded gaming company Indiagames, which was later acquired by Walt Disney Co. in a deal worth $80-100 million. Gondal, who was managing director of the digital arm of Disney-UTV—which is a part of Walt Disney Co. (India) Pvt. Ltd—quit in April of 2013.

GOQii is his second venture, which he started in February last year. It produces bands that measure the amount of physical effort made by the body—the number of steps taken and distance walked. This data is linked to an application available on the phone that is tracked by fitness trainers, nutritionists and dieticians. The application then provides advice to the user about the kind of diet and exercise he or she needs. The company offers two subscription models at 6,999 and 11,999 for the half-yearly and yearly packages, respectively.

GOQii uses the concept of Karma Points, which users can collect relative to the distance they walk or run when using the product. The company has partnerships with philanthropic organizations who will convert the Karma Points into donations.

The company competes with Fitbit, Nike’s FuelBand and Jawbone UP. According to Gondal, his firm is not in the wearable band business, but in the business of helping people get fit and changing their lives. Soon GOQii will be opening up its platform to other bands, which means that you can use any band. In turn, we will use the band of your preference to connect you to good karma and a good coach, which will ultimately help you reach your life’s goal.

GOQii had raised an undisclosed amount in angel funding from Neeraj Arora, business development head at messaging service WhatsApp Inc., and Marco Argenti, vice-president, mobile, at Amazon Web Services Inc. in 2014. GOQii has the backing of investors from varied backgrounds such as Amit Singhal, senior vice-president and software engineer at Google Inc., and Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit-Nene.
