Mercedes starts local assembly of CLA model in India

This is the first time that Mercedes model is being assembled outside Europe

Mumbai: Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd has started local assembly of the CLA model at its facility near Pune, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. This is the first time that the model is being assembled outside Europe.

Its the seventh model from Mercedes to be assembled locally. Mercedes has also started local assembly of the GLA Sport (petrol), it said.

The move will help the firm to pass on the benefits ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs200,000 to buyers and meet demand during the festive season, it said.

The price of the locally produced CLA models start from Rs30.70 lakh going up to Rs33.90 lakh; that of GLA starts from Rs33.90 lakh.

“The CLA is already a winning product in our portfolio," said Eberhard Kern, managing director and chief executive at Mercedes India in the statement, adding that the model has been rapidly acquiring new customers to the brand and replicating its global success in India as well. “We are extremely satisfied with our CLA strategy, which has contributed majorly to our new generation cars growth and redefined the segment completely," he said.

Mercedes-Benz India snatched pole position from Audi India in the three months ended 31 March as the largest selling luxury car brand in the country.

Mercedes sold 3,566 cars in the quarter, an increase of 40% from a year earlier, compared with 3,181 cars sold by Audi, an increase of 14.5%.

Audi, however, managed to lead in the full financial year by 79 cars. It sold 11,292 units during the year ended March, compared with Mercedes-Benz’s 11,213.
