Global shipments of personal computers (PCs) by volume were little changed in April-June from the same period last year, after eight consecutive quarters of decline caused by the rising popularity of tablet devices and smartphones in emerging markets, research firm Gartner Inc. said in a report on Friday.

Worldwide PC shipments reached 75.8 million units in the quarter, a 0.1% increase from April-June 2013.

Lenovo Group Ltd continued to be the global leader in worldwide PC shipments with a 19.2% market share. Hewlett-Packard Co.’s shipments rose 21% in the three months, its fastest pace in four years, as the company undertook efforts to boost its PC business with a review of products and stockkeeping units.

“While the worldwide PC market stopped two years of declining shipments in the second quarter, there were mixed results, as stabilization in developed markets was offset by a decline in emerging markets," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, in a statement. “The PC industry in emerging markets has been impacted by the allure of low-cost tablets. These low-cost tablets continue to take spending from new PC units, meaning that it will take more time for PC sales to stabilize in emerging markets."

The US as well as Europe and the Middle East and Africa markets saw an increase, of 7.4% and 8.6%, respectively, in the second quarter of the year, as compared to the corresponding period last year. The Asia-Pacific PC market declined 9.5% in the reporting period over the year-ago period.
