A dance performance that shows intimacy between two men

NEW DELHI :

A private affair is being made public: Two dancers get intimate for two-and-a-half hours on a khat (charpoy) in a bedroom, visible to everyone. They want to make the world understand the threads of physical and emotional intimacy between two men, says Mandeep Raikhy, who has choreographed the dancers—Lalit Khatana and Parinay Mehra—for his latest dance piece, Queen-size.

“The idea (of the performance) is to explore the meaning of proximity, gaze," says Raikhy. He started conceptualizing Queen-size two years ago after reading an article, published in The Indian Express in 2000, by the late film-maker and activist Nishit Saran on the Indian Penal Code’s Section 377, which criminalizes homosexuality. “Queen-size is a choreographic interpretation of that article, a response to our present sociocultural environment. At the same time, it also raises questions about privacy and dissent," says Raikhy.

Why a queen-sized khat and not a proper bed? “It’s rustic, it’s transparent. You can see above it, under it and through it; there’s no place for hiding, and there’s no need for hiding," says Raikhy. Adding, “The charpoy also acts as a third dancer, providing sound to the piece."

Japan’s sound designer Yasuhiro Morinaga has used sounds that “show the interaction between the inside and outside worlds". “Like juxtaposing the sound of touch with the sound of horns outside," says Raikhy.

The dancers will perform at a private residence in the Capital. “You can even stand outside the room and watch the performance through the window. You can choose your perspective—a voyeur, a spectator, anything," says Raikhy.

Queen-size will be presented from 27-29 May, 7.15pm/8.45pm, at 24, Jor Bagh, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. For registration, call 9971406113. The performance is suitable for those aged 18 and above.
