Number of obese people more than underweight

The number of obese people exceeds the total number of underweight people, a World Health Organisation (WHO) study involving 700 global researchers suggests. The study says the number of people with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 has grown six times from 1975’s figure of 105 million to 641 million in 2014. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by height. A BMI score of more than 25 means the person is overweight, over 30 means obese and over 40 denotes morbid obesity. China and the United States had the highest number of obesity cases.

In South Asian countries, 25% of the population was found to be underweight. The study was published in Lancet medical journal. Read more here.

Ignoring sleep problems can lead to chronic pain

Early identification and treatment of sleep-related issues can help reduce chronic pain later, a Dutch study suggests. To study the link between sleep problems and pain, researchers from the University of Groningen followed 1,750 young men and women aged 19-22 years for a period of three years to find if the quality of sleep had any effect on and specific types of pain such as musculoskeletal, headache and abdominal pain. They found that 38% of the participants with severe sleep problems suffered from chronic pain, while only 14% of those without sleep problems suffered from chronic pain. The study was published in journal PAIN. Read more here.

Physical activity during pregnancy makes offspring physically active

Women who are more physically active during pregnancy are more likely to have children who tend to be more physically active, a US study suggests. Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine conducted a study on genetically identical mice and controlled the amount of physical activity of the mothers before pregnancy. It was found that mice born to mothers that exercised during pregnancy were 50% more physically active compared to those born to mothers who did not exercise. The study was published in the FASEB Journal. . Read more here.

Population-based intervention can cut diabetes risk

Diabetes is growing in India but up to 80% of diabetes cases can be prevented through population-based interventions such as regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight. Speaking at the briefing to mark the World Health day 2016 in New Delhi, Henk Bekadam from World Health Organisation (WHO) said, “Early screening, increased access to health care services, affordable diagnosis and treatment and patient empowerment for self-management are also vital components of the control of diabetes."According to Diabetes Federation Atlas 2015, 69.2 million Indians are suffering from diabetes and almost half of them are unaware about it. Inherited genes that can cut lifespan by 3 years found

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh have discovered two DNA changes that may affect how long a person lives. Having a copy of one of the variants can reduce lifespan by up to a year and having both can reduce it by three years. One of the variants is linked to increased risk of respiratory issues and lung cancer. The second is linked to Alzheimer’s disease and cholesterol. These gene changes had different effects on men and women. The gene change linked to Alzheimer’s disease had a greater effect on women, while the one responsible for lung disease affected men more. The scientists analysed genetic information of more than 152,000 people for their study. The study appears in the journal Nature Communications. Read more here.:
