Out of the closet | Sona Mohapatra
Why this singer-lyricist must have glass bangles and boots in her stage wardrobe, and the unique way she wears her saris
Glam meets grunge
On the day we visited singer, lyricist and music producer Sona Mohapatra in her Matunga, Mumbai, home, she was padding around barefoot in a long, loose shift. A closer look revealed it’s a men’s kurta by Kallol Datta, creator of the anti-fit grunge gear Mohapatra says she can’t get enough of.
“Kallol would like everything to be all goth and black but I have this flamboyant side to me," she says, pointing to the gota panel she got him to attach to the front of the kurta, which she wears as a dress.
How would you describe your personal style?
Shringar, or dressing up every day, is a lovely thing for me. With my music, I’ve always wanted to be a bridge between the contemporary and traditional, and I think that reflects in my style too. I prefer being comfortable in my skin, which means not following trends blindly. No bodycon dresses for me. My style is generally quite mismatched. I pair super-glam bling with grunge. I have a huge collection of jackets, from belted trenchcoats to cropped leather biker-style boleros. I like Ikat dhotis, breathable tunics, jumpsuits, shirts with military epaulettes. And stoles, lots of stoles. Sometimes threaded into epaulettes.
