In 1982, Arundhati and Jagdish Raja, who wrote and acted in English plays in Bangalore, started the Artistes’ Repertory Theatre (ART), an English-language theatre company. Thirty years later, ART has over 70 plays in its portfolio.
“This year we began celebrating three decades of ART and then thought what better way to do that than to revive five of the best plays and recreate them," says Vivek Madan, programming executive at Jagriti.
In addition to the plays, there will also be performances. “We are calling them asides. These will mostly be performances that can be anything ranging from dance to music, keeping with Jagriti’s effort to be a performance space and not just a theatre space," says Madan. They will include a stand-up comic show called The Polished Bottoms on 17 August and a dance performance by the Anjika Dance Company of Manipur on 30 September.
